FREE High Definition Television Broadcasts, here's how it works:

Many people are not aware that high definition signals are currently broadcast (off-air or over-the-air) and are available for use. These HD signals are available to any person with a high definition antenna and a high definition television tuner. You can watch digital TV including High Definition (HDTV) broadcasts for free even if you don’t subscribe to satellite or cable. Images provided by your local TV station can be superior to pay or subscription services such as Digital Cable (Adelphia) or Satellite (Direct TV or Dish Network).

Free "over-the-air" DTV (Digital Television) has been mandated by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), and all television broadcasters are required to provide this service to you, "over the air"... for FREE! Also, HDTV can provide up to 5.1 channels of Dolby® Digital CD-quality surround sound, adding to the ultimate home theatre experience.

High-definition television is a new format for broadcasting TV programming. The existing format is called NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) and is analog. By contrast, the signals in HDTV are digital. "over-the-air" DTV uses binary code, the same system of ones and zeroes that runs on computers and digitally recorded compact discs.

Here are the FREE HDTV stations available in Palm Beach County Florida:

FOX WFLX , CBS WPEC, NBC WPTV (Digital HD for NFL), ABC WPBF

What does DTV, HDTV, and SDTV mean?
DTV is a general reference to Digital Television technology. DTV broadcasts are either in HDTV (High Definition TV) or SDTV (Standard Definition TV). These have different levels of resolution - as high as 1125 scanning lines (interlaced), which is called HDTV or High Definition Television, to as low as 525 (interlaced or progressive) scanning lines, called SDTV or Standard Definition Television.

HDTV has differences from existing signals? The HDTV signal is digital resulting in crystal clear, noise-free pictures and CD quality sound. For the technophile, there are about 20 megabits per second of information per broadcast channel. HDTV has many viewer benefits

Here are some of the improvements and benefits of HDTV

Aspect Ratio fits new TVs
Most televisions today are manufactured in a 4 by 3 aspect ratio, which means the screen is 4 units wide by 3 units high. But theatrically released movies are usually in a much wider aspect, taking advantage of the human field of vision (which is wider across horizontally). HDTV signals are sent in a 16 by 9 aspect ratio, mimicking the wide scope of movies. HDTV's aspect ratio makes for a more immersive and intense viewing experience

Picture Resolution fits the HDTV design
Resolution is a measure of picture sharpness. Current analog television contains about 480 active scanning lines resulting in a picture resolution of about 330 lines of resolution. By comparison today's VHS VCR's have about 240 lines of resolution which is why VHS recordings don't look as sharp as the original picture. DVD's offer higher resolution typically on the order of 400-480 lines of resolution. (Note the number of scanning lines does not equal resolution. For example, both the VHS and DVD formats have 480 active scanning lines but have different resolutions.) HDTV offers resolution that is at least twice that of analog television. You can expect razor sharp images from HDTV

Digital Sound means less noise
Just as your CDs sound better than your old audiocassette tapes, HDTV's digital audio signal sounds better than standard television's analog sound. Also, some HDTV programs include Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. Properly decoded, each audio track can be sent to a different speaker, creating a three-dimensional sound field in your living room. Many of the WB's prime time programs contain Dolby Digital surround sound for your listening pleasure.

A few items to consider:

You may have DTV if you subscribe to the digital package and get digital programming, often described as HDTV. But the digital cable tier and satellite service are not necessarily DTV. Your cable or satellite system may be using digital technology as a more efficient way of delivering analog programming to you.

Free "over the air" HDTV images provided by your local TV station can be superior to pay services such as Digital Cable or Satellite. Not all of the 'digital information' is required to be carried by these pay services. Also, just because a show is viewed on one of the pay services or is 'digital' does not mean it is a HDTV signal. Most cable or satellite pay services do not yet carry your local HDTV digital channels. Just because it's digital doesn't mean it's HDTV. Many of your local television broadcasters can deliver a true HDTV picture that you can watch, and it's FREE "over-the-air"!
